Hi, I’m Lauren - a queer, self taught mixed media portrait artist from Alabama.
I grew up watching old films with my great grandmother. These were some of the most precious times of my life. I’ve always been mesmerized by old Hollywood actors. Til this day I have a deep love for old Hollywood, which brought me to my series “The Golden Age”. This series never really ended, old Hollywood actors will always be my favorite subjects to draw. You will occasionally see them pop up in my work from time to time. For now I’ve stepped out of the Golden Age and have been inspired by all kinds of pop culture.
My work has slowly evolved over time from graphite, to acrylic, to mixed media (graphite & acrylic), to aerosol, and finally, to digital painting. At the beginning of 2019, I picked up my wife's new IPad and thought I'd try drawing on it. Ever since, I haven't been able to put it down which is why all of my work today is digital. For those of you who don't know much about it, it's really no different than drawing on a piece of paper. The only difference is that you're drawing on a tablet with a fancy pencil or in my case, an IPad pro with an Apple pencil. Aaaaand, you have any medium available to you at your fingertips without having to drag any art supplies out which is a very nice bonus.
In June, 2019 I released my first zine called, "LGBTQ+ Trailblazers (You May or May Not Have Heard of). It's a history of different incredible individuals who've paved the way for queer people throughout history. I wanted to share these stories with hopes that people would not just learn about these individuals, but also have a better understanding and empathy for what trials & difficulties queer people had to face back then & even today.
These days, I live an incredibly full and happy life. I don't mean to brag, but it's really the best. I'm a full time college student, stay at home dog & cat mom, and wife. And on July 6th, 2020 I got to marry the most wonderful, gorgeous (inside & out), smart, sweet, supportive, and pretty much all around perfect woman named Tara. I wouldn't be where I am now without her. She has helped me thrive and encourages me to unapologetically be my gayest and best self. I'm also currently attending Athens State University where I'll eventually have a bachelors in Graphic Design. Oh, and one more thing to know about me is that I have an unhealthy obsession and love for Dolly Parton.
